The Verb "Olmak": To Be

The forms of the Turkish verb " to be" appear as suffixes. They are never used alone, as separate words ( when the verb "olmak " is used separately it means " to become, to happen ": hasta olmak to become ill.

Third Person Form

Note that the present tense form of the verb " to be" appears as the suffix 'dır /dir/ dur /dür' in the third person singular and plural.
When the vowel is the final syllable of the verb is 'a or 'ı the vowel ın the suffıx appears as 'ı'

• yaşlıdır --> is/ are old.
• aslandır --> is/ are lion (s)

When the vowel in the final syllable of the verb is 'e or 'i the vowel in the suffix appears as 'i'

• güzeldir --> is/are pretty, beautiful
• çirkindir --> is/are ugly

When the vowel in the final syllable of the verb is 'o' or 'u' the vowel in the suffix appears as 'u'

• sarhoştur --> is/ are drunk
• uzundur --> is /are long, tall

When the vowel in the final syllable of the verb is 'ö ' or 'ü ' the vowel in the suffix appears as 'ü'

• sürücüdür --> is /are the drivers
• önsözdür --> is / are preface / introductions.
