The Dative case - Yönelme durumu

The Dative case is formed by putting the suffixes –(y)a , -(y)e according to the previous vowel of the word (vowel harmony). If the word ends to a vowel, then, the suffix becomes -ya or –ye, if not, then you just put –a or –e

a,ı,o,u------- -(-y)a e,i,ö,ü------- -(y)e

Examples:

araba-ya, kapı-ya, yol-a, ot-a hediye-ye tahta-ya ev-e ,otobüs-e, şöfer-e
Generally Yönelme durumu indicates there's a movement towards

Okula gidiyorum.

I am going to school. Öğrenciler yurda dönüyorlar.

The students are returning to the hostel. Yolcular otobüse biniyorlar.

The passengers are getting in the bus.

The Dative case expresses:

A. The indirect object of a verb

Yeni evimi Ali'ye gösterdim.

I showed my new house to Ali. Ayşe'ye bir hediye vereceğiz

We are going to give to Ayşe a present Ayşe'ye bir hediye alacağız

We are going to buy a present for Ayşe

B. Place whither

Almanya'ya döndüler.
They returned to Germany. Demlik masaya koydu
He put the teapot on the table. Kitapları rafa koydum.
i put the books on the shelf. Yere düştü.
İt fell to the ground. Koltuğa oturdum.
İ seated myself on the armchaır. Barınağa gizlenmişler!
They apparently hit ın a shelter!

C. Purpose

Kenan kız arkadaşına telefon etmeye çıktı

Kenan went out to call his girlfriend. Eşim bana çorba pişiriyor

My husband is making soup for me. Seni görmeye geldim.

I've come to see you. Bu akşam yemeğe dışarı çıkalım mı?

Certain bare postpositions "doğru",(towards) "göre",(according to) "kadar"(until)

Saat üçe kadar çalıştık.

We worked until three o'clock Sabaha kadar dans ediyorduk.

We were dancing until the morning. Ahmet'e göre kocamla tartışmamalıydım.

According to Ahmet i shouldn't argue with my husband. İşçilere göre makineler çok eski.

According to the workers the machines were very old.
Certain adjectives e.g "yakın" (near) "uygun"(suitable for)

Üniversiteye yakın bir ev arıyorlar.

They are looking for a house near university. Bu elbiseyi bana uygun değil.

This dress is not suitable for me.
